Custom email (new post & newsletter) not connecting

I created a custom email to be sent anytime I have a new post. It shows as activated but it’s not connecting to my WordPress.com site event though Mailpoet is an active plugin and I think I’ve done everything right in settings. Every time I do a test as I am about to publish the post it defaults to the WordPress.com default email design. I’ve been trying to figure this out for hours and even created another template as a newsletter so there was a custom template in both places. Please help.
