Custom field

I’m trying out this beautiful plugin. I inserted a checkbox in the form of a funnel which, if selected, assigns a tag to the user. If the tag is checked, the automatic sending starts. I don’t understand if Groundhogg creates the custom field or I have to do it first. If I have to do it first I don’t quite understand how and I’m looking for documentation. Thanks so much for any help.
