Hello everyone. I’m using %%cf_custom-field-name%% snippet to auto populate my meta descriptions for a custom post type. It works perfectly.

However, I want limit the length of the output, to say 160 characters. Is there a custom snippet or code that would allow me to do this.

    Hello @thomaspaylor

Thanks for reaching out about your meta description length. Generally, meta descriptions are between 150 and 170 characters, and Google truncates the ones that exceed this length. We suggest keeping the length to 156 characters maximum.

There’s no custom snippet or code to give it a definite/specific number of 160 characters.

Hello. Thank you for your response. My query was more to do with the %%cf_custom-field-name%% snippet which I’m using to auto-populate my meta descriptions. This takes the description of the custom post and uses it for the meta description field. The only problem is that these descriptions are around 300-500 words long, and I need them to be shortened. I wondered if there was a way to do this, so that Yoast automatically trims the (%%cf_custom-field-name%%) meta description down to a sensible number of characters, just like it does when you use %%excerpt%% ?

No, the Yoast SEO plugin doesn’t have a feature to automatically trim the meta description.
