Custom field not working in newsletter

I have a custom field created for subscribers, and I want that fields data to show in my newsletter, but it’s not working. Here’s what Ive done.

Added custom field to signup form via settings.
Collected data of subscriber
Have a newsletter setup that is auto sent out to new subscribers, to this I’ve added the shortcode for the custom field via the button in the editor, the shortcode shows as being [field:1] when I add it.

Am I missing something here?
