Custom Fields

The description states “With eCommerce Product Catalog you can specify as many attributes or custom fields for each product as you need.” How do custom fields work? Are custom fields only part of the attributes section? If I wanted to add another text field after the product description could I do that? Or a field for entering a URL for an affiliate product link (that would then become a button)?

This question goes for Product Catalog X too, as I’m trying it out as well.
