Custom file type

I am trying to allow my customers to upload a file that a normal computer cannot read the file extension name so it just makes it .file, how can i make it so when I upload a file no matter what the file extension is it allows the upload. I have tried changing the filetype to accept .file but even that doesnt work. Will i need to work out what the extension is and then allow it? Please help
