Don’t know where to find what version of WP I am using.

    site is https://workinggreen.wordpress.com

I uploaded a custom header and it worked fine.

Then we wanted changes to the header to add some text. Uploaded that version and it showed up on the Dashboard, and said it was successfully done and to visit the site.

But it was not changed. The original one I uploaded was still there.

I have even tried going back to the default header to get rid of the first image, and it still won’t go away. The image seems to be stuck in some kind of cache.

    Can someone please help.

Background images often do not show up in your browser because the previous background image is already in the browser cache. Sometimes holding down the Shift key while you refresh/reload the page will make the new image load instead of the cached image. Sometimes right-clicking the image and choosing to view it, then reloading to show the new image, then clicking Back and reloading the page again will clear the cached image.
