custom hierarchical taxonomy

File gallery allows to tag images, I guess it is its own custom taxonomy, or is it the same shared tags as for the posts ?
I would like to know if it is possible to use a custom taxonomy to sort the files. Or if it is possible to have, like for posts, something like a category taxonomy, which is hierarchical contrary to the tags.
Being able to link the plugin to a hierarchical custom taxonomy would be amazing…
Any thought on this ?
