I’d like to add a mapping rule for a custom meta filed I’ve defined using essential grid (EG). I’d like to sort the grids I’ve created by a filed I can easily maintain in the media library, rather than having to edit each individual piece of media.

I’ve added a new custom_meta filed in EG called eg-image-cat

When I try to “Add a new Mapping rule” the drop down doesn’t show this meat filed. It does show all of the other custom meta fields that EG has added when installing the examples for that plugin. Is there a way of refreshing the drop down?

I think MLA is proabably a great plugin – but it is, at first glance, very complicated. Is there a beginners guide/getting started with MLA guide?

Thanks for your question and your patience – I’m on the road with limited Internet access.

I do not have a copy of Essential Grid so I cannot reproduce the problem you’ve described. The custom field dropdown control is built from scratch each time the page is displayed, so there’s no refresh problem. The name you mentioned, “eg-image-cat“, suggests a custom taxonomy rather than a custom field. Is that a possibility? If you go to the Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab and scroll down to the “Taxonomy Support” section, does eg-image-cat or something like it show up in the taxonomy list?

If you go to the Media/Edit Media screen for an item that has an eg-image-cat assigned, does that field show up in the custom fields area of the Edit Media screen?

If the above suggestions don’t help, I’d be happy to have a look on your server if you can give me a temporary account. I understand that might not be possible.

I will leave this topic unresolved until I hear back from you. Thanks for your understanding and for your interest in the plugin.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I’m beginning to think that it’s a specific custom meta field for essential grid, and is limited to the plugin and anything that plugin adds. The name “eg-image-cat“, does not show up in the taxonomy list.

In the edit media field, the field only shows up in the Essential grid part of the page – leading me to the conclusion above.

Be happy to give you a temporary login – but how to I get it to you securely?

Thanks for setting up an account for me and for contacting me offline with the credentials. Thanks as well for your patience while I’m on the road.

I was able to access the site without any trouble and track down the answer (which I should have thought of earlier).

MLA populates the custom field dropdown control by querying the database postmeta table and finding field names. Of course, until you assign a value to the field to one or more posts/pages, there is no row in the postmeta table and thus the field names will not be added to the dropdown control.

I edited the “Hello World” post and assigned a value to eg-image-cat in that post. The field now appears on the dropdown control in the Settings/Media Library Assistant Custom Fields tab.

I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if you have any problems or further questions regarding the custom field mapping features.

Thanks again for your confidence in giving me access to the site.

My turn to apologise for not getting back to you – I was away last week and this week has been rather hectic!

Great solution -and yes, probably obvious if you’re very experienced with WordPress.

I can now go ahead and asssign categories to my images to be sorted within Essential grid (If I can work it out….)

    regards
