Custom Next/Prev buttons not working

I’m trying to use custom next/prev buttons for the slider. These buttons mark up is placed outside of the slideshow markup. I’ve tried all the necessary things I could think of but all in vain. The slide does not change with any button (the plugin’s own buttons work fine). Any idea how to make them work?
