I know you can drag and drop attributes in the product editor to change the order, but the change is never reflected on the front end – it stays at alphabetical no matter what I do in the product editor.

Can someone please explain how to apply a custom order per product (not globally) so that the custom order is shown on the product detail page, or direct me to a current working reference for how to do this?

Also, I looked in Products > Attributes as directed in an old post but it was blank, no attributes shown…

Let me correct myself – it’s the Variations that I want to order. For example if I have three colors, I want them displayed in a custom order in the Color dropdown when a customer is looking at the product detail page.

I can drag and drop the variation colors into any order, but they’re always shown in alphabetical order in the dropdown.

How do I get variations to show in custom order?

Why is there drag and drop sorting of Variations at all, if it has no effect on how they are displayed on the front end?

I feel like I’m missing something very very obvious.

Sorting the variations doesn’t have an effect on the order the attributes show up in. There can be multiple attributes per variation. You have to think of it in terms of attributes, and not think about the variations themselves.

If you are using a custom attributes, the order depends on how you have them listed here: https://cld.wthms.co/16OF6/2V553yzy

If using global attributes, you can sort the terms at Products > Attributes.

    Thank you!

That’s exactly what I needed to see.

One more question – why do the variations have drag and drop, if reordering them doesn’t change anything?

It is mostly for the store managers sake when it comes to updating inventory and prices.

One other thing – the client says when she imports products, the attributes (which were in alphabetical order) get scrambled.

Are attributes not shown in alphabetical order by default? If no, is there a way to force this?

If using global attributes, you can sort the terms at Products > Attributes.

Its worked for me… Thank You @caleb Burks

I have the same problem. I can shuffle the order in the “Attributes” but after I save and update they revert to alphabetical.

    Anybody have a solution.

Everything works the way it should, I just don’t know how to drag and drop the attributes into a custom order when they number more than 20 and 6 of the attributes have been paginated to a second page of attributes. How does one pull that off?

I think there is a per-page setting in Screen Options?

    Go to Products -> Attributes
Click on the name of the Attribute you want to change the order of.
Once you get there, when you hover the terms your cursor becomes a cross and you can drag and drop the Attribute Terms into the order you require.

I’m having a problem with this as well.

I noticed a site I was building for a client had the variations in the wrong order. My variations are not like most. I.e. its not a case of 3 colours used on various products. Every variable product has different attributes. I’d like them in alphabetical order. If I change the sort order it doesnt change the products already in the database. Should this not happen?

Mainly my problem is with numbers.

If I have something that is 1mm, something that is 10mm and something that is 5mm, it will arrange in that order, rather than 1,5,10. I’m hoping changing to alphabetical will change this but knowing my luck, even if I can get it to rejig all the products in the database, it will still be 1,10,5? :/
