custom plugin to add a link to footer?

I am learning how to make a plugin, and I thought a simple exercise would be to create a plugin that puts a link in the footer. I have my plugin created and activated, but I can’t find how to put the link in the footer. I think I need a hook? But the tutorials I have found don’t really explain how to do this.
