Custom post structure vs sub-folder

  • Hello all,

    First of all, I hope this in the right place! My apologies if it isn’t.

    I’m fairly new to WordPress & am trying to achieve something along the following lines:

    website.com/ <— all pages go here —>
    website.com/blog/ <— all blog posts go here —>

    I have tried doing this by installing WordPress in a sub-folder and I can get the correct URL structure but some of the theme templates seem to go a bit funny.

    I notice I can get the same effect by using permalinks -> custom structure “/blog/%postname%/”

    This seems a bit too easy. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t be doing it this way? All my links etc seem to work just fine!

  • You could create a category called ‘blog’ and then attach the category to all your blog posts. Then, from your permalinks settings change them to ‘/%category%/%postname%/’. That way only your blog posts will have the ‘blog’ slug before them.

    Of course, this solution assumes you aren’t going to be using the categories functionality for anything else.

    No reason at all not to use that ?? Works fine.
