    Hi,

Is it possible to have custom sidebars on custom post type category pages?

I couldn’t see any option that show me the categories I use for my custom post types, only the main categories from the blog.

    Thanks,
    Jamie

  • Hey @jamiek47,

    Hope you’re well today.

At sidebar location settings, there is “Archive Types” tab. You can choose custom taxonomies archive pages from there. Did you try this option?

    Hi Oguz,

The page type is “Event Listing”.

So I tried “As Event Listing – Sidebar for selected Category Archives” but it only shows WordPress main categories, not custom ones.

I also tried “As Event Listing – Sidebar for selected Archive Types” but it only shows page types not actual categories.

What reason could it be they don’t show?

    Thanks,
    Jamie

    Hello @jamiek47

I apologize for the delay in this thread.

Please make sure that the Sidebar, showing up on the custom post type page is replaceable. Go to Appearance > Widget, on the default sidebar tick on “Allow this sidebar to be replaced” . Please see the screenshot:

Let us know how it went!

    Kind regards,
    Nastia

    Hi Nastia,

Yes, the “Event Listing” sidebar is set to “Allow this sidebar to be replaced”.

The issue is that none of the custom categories are appearing, only the core WordPress ones from the blog?

    Hey @jamiek47,

    I hope you’re well today!

For sidebar locations, there is no option for the custom taxonomies single element. But you can show widgets from “Visibility” options. Open any widget and at the bottom of widget you will see the button: Visibility. Once you click, you will see “+” button. When you click it you can specify the custom taxonomy that you want to show that widget.

    I hope that helps!

    Hi Oguz,

I’m still only seeing the WordPress core categories, not the custom ones?

    What could be causing this?

    Thanks,
    Jamie

    Hello @jamiek47

    Hope you are doing well!

I’m still only seeing the WordPress core categories, not the custom ones?

Please let us know what widget you are using? Is the same widget showing the custom categories when using the default sidebar?

If you are looking for a widget to show custom taxonomies please try the List Custom Taxonomy Widget plugin.

    Hope this helps!

The widget is called “Event Listing – Sidebar”.

The categories still don’t appear when to select the sidebar location on the default sidebar.

That plugin doesn’t look like it has anything to do with displaying a custom sidebar on custom category pages :S

    Hey @jamiek47,

The only way to show/hide widgets on custom taxonomy single pages is Visibility options for the current version. When I create custom taxonomies I can see them in the Visibility options.

So if you can’t see maybe there is some kind of plugin or theme conflict. Can you try plugin or theme conflict test? Also if the theme and plugins you use on that site is free, I want to test on my side too. Can you tell me which plugin and/or theme you are using to create custom categories?

    Cheers,
    Oguz

    Hey @jamiek47,

One more thing; can you show me what are you seeing when you press + button on visibility option?

    Hi Oguz,

I am using a theme called Events but it is paid for https://templatic.com/wordpress-event-themes/events/

The categories I am referring to are event categories within the theme.

Could I email you? I could give you access so you can look inside my admin panel which might give you a better understanding of what is going on.

    Thanks,
    Jamie
