I’m using a theme called “Panel” for a webcomics website that has normal WordPress “posts” that appear as blog posts but also custom “Comics” posts where I post comics and it builds out a comics archive page and lets you scroll through just the comics separately from blog posts. The functionality of this feature is driven by Jetpack – the Jetpack plugin has to be installed and working – if not, this feature stops working. Suddenly over the past 24hrs, my comic site is broken – the “Comics” post type is missing from the options down the left side of my dashboard but there doesn’t appear to be an issue with the Jetpack plugin.

I’ve restored backups using UpDraft from weeks ago when the site was fine and still I’m getting the same issue so it seems like something has maybe changed with Jetpack?

I’m looking at possibly changing themes to “Toocheke” which is a similar type of theme as “Panel” but I hope I haven’t lost the copy that went along with my 100+ comics with each of the custom posts…

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Ok I solved this. The issue is Jetpack 13.7

I was able to restore a backup of my site from a month ago (July 19) where everything was working fine and my custom post option “comics” was visible in the sidebar menu in the WP dashboard.

I updated plugins and themes one by one, leaving Jetpack until the end. Once I updated Jetpack from 13.6 to 13.7, sure enough, the “comics” custom post option disappeared from the sidebar menu in the WP dashboard and the comics content and functionality was gone from the website.

Does anyone have any clues to what was updated in the plugin that would cause this? Any Jetpack folks?? For now I’ll have to stick with 13.6 and turn off auto plugin updates but would appreciate it if the next update can solve for this.

I just ran updates and the same thing happened to me. Super frustrating. I’m wondering if maybe it was depreciated.

Until I found the Jetpack comics posttype I hadn’t really found an elegant solution for having a comics section on the site.

Yes, I would like to know if this is a widespread problem and if so, if Jetpack will address it in the next update…

Hey there @orbitstudios72, this custom post type has been deprecated with Jetpack 13.7.

There was a deprecation warning in the WP Admin for this custom post type since May of this year.

Bummer. Back to the drawing board.

    Thanks for the update though.

Thanks @swisha8c – so I believe deprecation means that the functionality I require from Jetpack to power this theme won’t be coming back? If so I guess that means I can keep going and not update Jetpack but that will likely cause issues down the road and possibly affect security at a certain point if PHP is downgraded, etc.

I think I will do that for now but at some point in the next few months or maybe during downtime towards the holidays (Nov/Dec) I’ll create a new site… The theme Toocheke for comics provides that custom post type in the theme itself but it will be time consuming as I don’t see an easy way to move the current comics posts into the Toocheke comics posts…

Again thanks for that info – let me know if I have misunderstood what deprecation means.

Likely what I will do is set up the new site with the new theme at a different domain for now and maybe slowly build it out and then move it to the correct domain when it’s complete.

    Hi @orbitstudios72,

so I believe deprecation means that the functionality I require from Jetpack to power this theme won’t be coming back

That’s correct. And you are right that keeping an outdated version of Jetpack is not a good practice. Rebuilding your site may indeed be a good idea in this case.

    Thank you!
