Custom post type restricted to X posts

  • Hey folks,

    I have a need for a custom post type which is limited to 3 posts.
    I was wondering what might be the best way to go about that.
    I was thinking I could sniff for the save_post on that particular slug but I’d really rather then user not be able to either click new or be alerted at the start of the form rather than wait until they complete the form and then see an error.

    I hope someone out there can guide me
