Custom Profile Contact Fileds

I want to add these fields to my registration page:

* Phone Number
* Birth Date

How can I check if the phone number entered is correct or not? I mean I want to check if only digits entered in phone number field and how can I check if only date is entered in “Birth Date” filed or not?
