Custom Query (x number of one category, y of another)

Hello, I have a site with several categories, and I would like to make a custom query that would show a specific number of posts from each post category on the main page. I know how to choose the categories to show, but I do not know if I can tell it to show x of one category and y of another… Does anyone know how to do this?
