Custom roles in workflows

Hi There-
I wanted to get more information about roles as it relates to workflows. I have tried a few different plugins recommended from your website.
I found this page

Is it not possible to extend this to use secondary or additional roles? I don’t really like the fact that I have to modify the core roles to create workflows. Is there another alternative or step I am missing?
