Custom template and plugin updates

Hi,
I made a custom template for recent posts, so far so good.
But everytime the plugin gets updated I have to manually upload the file in the plugin’s template directory.
Is there a more convenient way? Can I link the file somewhere, when I put it in my theme’s folder?
