• We wrote a custom theme for a client for an intranet site. Recently, an “update” for this theme started showing up in their Update listings. Someone at the client office decided to click Update and it actually completely overwrote our custom theme with one from the Theme Directory that had the same name. That is the only commonality between the two.

How does that even happen? Is it just matching up based on the Theme Name value? Does it not look at the Author or License info?

What was the name of your custom theme?

I reached out to a senior dev and they responded:

“Theme update checks are based pretty much entirely on the slug, which is the directory name that the theme is in. So name it not the same as one in the directory and you’ll not get a match for it.

Note: all slugs on .org are lowercase. So, using uppercase in the directory name will prevent a match.”

That should help you avoid this issue in the future.
