Custom variable and event tracking

I have a form that I need to make sure that an event and a custom variable are passed at the same time.
The custom variable would be populated using one of the fields required by the user and the event would simply count if they filled out the form.
Any ideas on how this would work with “old” version of Google Analytics? The site I am working on is not using Universal Analytics…however I wouldn’t mind seeing what that looks like as well.
Thoughts?
