Hi. I have a client site running WooCommerce. The client is hands-on so I only have minimal involvement now. They pointed out to me that all customer user names and emails have a few characters and numbers appended onto them, when viewed under Users e.g.

    user: johndoefgbh3458 and email: johndoefgbh3458(AT)randomemail.com
    (should be johndoe and johndoe(AT)randomemail.com)

The only exceptions seem to be customers who have edited their account details, these show up as expected. When viewed under WooCommerce > Customers they all appear correctly without the added characters. Admin user details are as they should be. I just added a new test customer account and the details are all stored as expected, no extra characters.

The client has no idea how long it’s been this way. I run two other WooCommerce sites which don’t have the issue (and which are largely administered by clients with minimal input from me), and I don’t have much other experience with WooCommerce. I’m not even sure it’s a problem but I can’t find any mention of anything similar anywhere. It looks like the kind of thing a security plugin might do to obfuscate user details.

The only recent changes to the site: installed Easy WP SMTP and Log Emails (due to a customer not receiving an order confirmation recently), just before all this was noticed.

Before going into more detail I thought I would ask here if this is expected/known behaviour, or if anyone might know what’s caused it (and what, if anything, to do about it)? I thought it was not possible to edit user names. I have a number of backups which I want to try to see if it’s been this way for a while or has changed recently, but I wanted to ask here first in case there’s something obvious I’ve missed.

    TIA.

On closer inspection, all of the users with appended characters have never placed an order, and all customers who have placed orders are listed correctly, so it seems these others may be spam registrations, which I’ve now taken steps to prevent.

    Hi @jaiji

Glad that could be figured out!

It’d be great if you share with the community here, what steps you took to stop the spam registrations. Anyone facing a similar issue may find it helpful.

Sure, I enabled WooCommerce integration in the Zero Spam plugin.

What’s the best way to confirm that certain registrations are indeed spam? Use an email verification service like email-checkerDOTnet?

    Hello @jaiji ,

Thanks for sharing what you’ve used to identify the spam registrations.

You can use email verification plugins to make sure all customers verify their email during registration. You can check our Customer Email Verification for these cases.

If you have any questions regarding the extension, feel free to create a ticket.

    Thank you.
