we just tried to copy the main template tmpl/single-tmpl.php in a child-theme tmpl/single-tmpl.php

the override works fine here.
Do you use any caching plugin? Did you try to clean the cache?

Sorry how do you use the child theme I thought it was all one, and no caching plugins.
