I do suggest using the pretty permalinks.
It is a built in feature of WP, not a plugin. You enable it under your WP-Admin > Settings > Permalinks.
I suggest using both
%postname% and %post_id%
in your permalink structure
like maybe this
/%year%/%post_id%/%postname%
All the choices are listed here (I don’t know why they don’t list them in the WP Admin interface anymore, they used to)

Enjoy!
p.s. There are other ways of customizing permalinks, with a plugin, to stuff more keywords in the link and delete any stopwords for optimized SEO. However this is only for someone who is going nuts about keyword stuffing. Normal bloggers need not worry about this. I suggest not worrying about that extreme level of customizing links.
