• Hi, I’ve downloaded a theme I’d like to use as a starting point, I’ve decided how I want to alter it, I’ve got my ducks in a row… now if I could just figure out how to edit the template?

I’m new to WP and am unsure of how to make them editable? The bottom of my theme editor says, “If this file were writable you could edit it.”

    How do I change this?

    Thanks!

  • I’ve just asked the same question. I presume the first step is to copy all the template and put that into an HTML editor to edit it.
Then I need to know how to get it back.

Well for anything substantive you guys need to forget any idea of using the inline template editor within WP. We all edit our stuff elsewhere. Either locally using XAMPP or similar or in a live test blog. But in each case the two tools required are a decent text editor
and the ability to use either ftp or at a push the file manager in CPanel. This then needs to be followed by extensive reading of the material in the codex (docs) herein. Theme dev in the inline editor is a fast track to a nervous breakdown.:)
