Customization won't load

This is my first time using WordPress. 4.2.2. I’ve downloaded the two required plugins and when customizing any of the appearance settings, the screen stays grey with the little spinning ball in the middle. I was able to edit the widgets and background color, and after saving the settings and activating the site, it won’t update.
