customize nav menu to make sub pages anchor links on parent page

  • On this site, category archives work as typical, showing an excerpt of posts to click and continue reading.
    PAGES should work differently. I’ve got the template working to show the subpages on the parent page. (this is for easier client editing of separate pages but viewers see it all on one page).

    BUT — I cannot figure out how to change the nav menu. Ideally it looks like this:
    list pages/categories/etc as set up in “menus”
    — if a page has subpages, change link to “>subpage title

    I meant a code that says

    does this PAGE have subpages?
       if yes, change url of subpage link to "parent-page-url#subpage-slug"
