I had to do a manual update of wordpress the other day because Make seems to give me issues with updating WordPress and a couple of plugins (e.g. WP SlimStat). I noticed afterwards that the background colour on the site (www.rosewoods.co.uk) had changed from black to grey. I went to the ‘Customize’ page under ‘Appearance’ but the page just loads to a blank grey page (screenshot here: https://imgur.com/IKnbmfG). In the tab title it says it’s loading but I get nothing. Any ideas how I can get the customizer back to I can put the site back the way it was?

    Thanks.

  • Interesting. I would have expected that the update would be to 5.3 or 5.4. WordPress itself has a minimum requirement of 5.2.4.

    Hi,

I just emailed the system info. Our php may be out of date because the site owner can’t remember how to access the c-panel or anything. Otherwise I think everything is up to date.

    Thanks.

    Hi @eckh20,

We received your system info, thanks. Your PHP version actually looks just fine, so the cause of your empty Customizer preview pane is still a mystery.

Here’s another thing to try: since you’re using Chrome, open up the developer console while you’re on the Customizer, and then reload the page. Look to see if you’re getting any error messages while the page loads. The blank preview pane could be an indication that the scripts on the page have halted because of an error.

I’m definitely getting errors. See screenshot of developer console for the customizer page: https://imgur.com/w3zqKTJ.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this? As I said, it wasn’t resolved by turning off all my plugins so don’t think it’s a conflict there.

    Thanks

    Hi @eckh20,

Thanks for the screenshot! It is definitely enlightening. For some reason the jQuery library is not loading correctly in the Customizer screen for you.

Have you tried temporarily switching to a different theme? Make doesn’t do anything to modify the core jQuery script, so I suspect it’s not the cause here, but this would help confirm that.

    Hi Corey,

I’m having the exact same problem.
    – Fresh install of WordPress 4.2.2
    – No plugins except Akismet (non-active)
    – Make-theme 1.5.2
    – No Make-plus

Live Preview as well as Customize Theme only show white page.
This problem does not persist with the Twenty Fifteen.

Any change you can give me some pointers where to look for solution?

If I can get Make-theme to work, and understand the source of this problem I’m considering Make-plus.

@rrrobbie do you see the same errors as eckh20 in your browser console? (see linked screenshot above)

    Which browser are you using?

    @corey: Thank you for replying.

Unfortunately the person I’m building the website for already wanted to switch to another (standard-)theme. His current website is very problematic, that’s why we’re beginning from scratch. Due to that change I cannot replicate my own problem any-more unfortunately.

I did like what I saw though. I didn’t have this problem using my own hosting-server so I think I will re-build my own website using the Make-theme.

    Thanks.

@corey I am having the same issue. When I go to Customizer it doesn’t load in options on the left, and just a white screen for preview; then browser stops responding and I get “Unresponsive script – A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue.
    Script: https://……./wp-admin/…ggest,utils,plupload&ver=4.2.2:8

    Everything up to date, using:
    PHP v4.1.8
    WP v4.2.2
Child theme of (free) Make 1.6.0
    Firefox

When I look at debug in Inspector, the closest guess is there is an issue with loading-script.php, but not sure which one, I guess there are a few in this group. (You have to excuse my ignorance in this area, I understand what they do, but that’s about it.)

I know it’s not a plugin issue because I deactivated all for a few minutes and the issue persisted.

Then (while they were still deactivated) I switched to TwentyFifteen and Customizer loaded with no issues.

While clicking around in inspector, I must’ve disabled a script because after a few it finally loaded the Customizer options panel on he left, but preview area was still white. Had same issue when I initially set the theme up as well.

I guess I can work around issue if I am patient but it would be good to figure out what is going on and how to resolve.

    Otherwise, great theme overall!

    Hi Krista!

That script you mention stopped responding is actually a whole bunch of core scripts that WordPress concatenates together when loading admin pages. Unfortunately this makes it hard to troubleshoot.

One thing you could try is the solution in the second link I shared above. That might at least tell you which script in particular is having issues. I am still unable to replicate the problem.

On a side note, are you sure your PHP version is 4.1.8? That is really old, and WordPress requires a minimum of 5.2.4.

    @corey, thanks for your reply.

I am in touch with hosting support and they did some additional testing to verify what I am experiencing.

I was incorrect, the site was running PHP 5.3. It was updated to 5.4 and 5.5 in order to test – the issue however remained.

The hosting company responded that they “tried disabling/enabling the plugins one by one – no change what so ever. There were no errors on the server’s error log, nor in cPanel – [they] also enabled the PHP reporting for the WordPress itself – but to no avail. The template’s preview can not be displayed and it just loads.”

They verified that with a default theme template it’s loading without any issues., so the error is obviously with the (Make) template itself.

They wanted me to double-check to see if there are other minimum requirements besides the PHP version, memory_limit for example, max_execution_timeout, etc?

The only minimum req I found in documentation is WP 4.0.

    Thanks!

    Hi Krista,

There are no additional hard and fast PHP requirements for Make, but you could try increasing the values for the parameters you mention and see if that helps. max_input_vars is another one you could test.

Hi Corey and other support people,

After having swithed to other themes for a while I ran into this problem again. This time I dove into the problem: in wp-config set debugging to TRUE. With me it gave an error code pointing towards the amount of available RAM memory.

This week we’ll contact our hosting company and get this sorted out. I’ll keep you updated.

    Hope this information helps.

    Robert
