customizer.php requires write access to wp-admin directory?

  • Hi there,
    I like to lock my permissions down so that any rogue scripts that might get installed aren’t so likely to trash my whole site. I have my WordPress directory itself owned by another user, with no write permissions to all directories except wp-content/uploads and a few other necessary places.

    However, when trying to customize the look and feel using the WordPress theme customizer it tells me I need to upload files via FTP. If I set the wp-admin directory to be writable by the webserver process then this goes away. But I can’t see what files it’s trying to write

    Anyone any ideas?

    Are you using Customizr theme from here https://www.ads-software.com/themes/customizr/ ?

    If so, I recommend asking at https://www.ads-software.com/support/theme/customizr so the theme’s developers and support community can help you with this.

    Hi there,
    No, just Astra theme, or indeed any theme. I’m talking about the standard WordPress theme customisation preview.

    I should also add that it seems to also need write access to wp-content too, despite me being unable to find any files actually written anywhere

    This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

    If you can install plugins, install “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/ On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.
