Customizing Kirumo

Hello, is anyone else using this theme? I like it a lot but it seems any customizing (beyond changing some colours) needs to be done directly in the css and template files, something I’m inexperienced with.

I would particularly like to add a full-width section to the home page (above the sidebar) so I can add a slider.
