Customizing simplepress forum home page width/sidebar etc

Objectives
-Moving the forum to the left and making it a little bigger width wise, I’d like to go with a fixed pixel width for the whole page
-Side bar on the right of the forum with the ability to post content for isntance advertising, up to date news with links.
-Custom header I’ll design across the whole page with the links to other pages built into the header (im not very sure how to do this)
-Custom footer

I’m new to css & php, I’m trying to learn, I find the code I need but understanding it has been my downfall.. it hasn’t clicked yet, need some direction, someone willing to help I really appreciate it.
