Is there any way to customize the size of images in these dumb WooCommerce Gutenberg block things, such as the Hand-Picked Product Block? Here I have a page https://www.alphabetpublishingbooks.com/best-of-the-year/ featuring some book authors. Each author has a different number of books but I’d like the book covers to be the same size. Why can’t I do that? Why must it just automatically resize to fill up space? This forces me to use super high-res images, which slows down my page loading time and also doesn’t look nice! I realize the easiest solution is just to force my authors to write more books. but I thought maybe someone considered letting the blog author have some control over what his blog looked like? Maybe??????

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi @walton,

First of all, I wanted to confirm that you were talking about these products: https://d.pr/i/Yewh25

I just tried the Hand-Picked Product Block on my test site using products with different size images and it did get cropped as expected and now the images look to be the same size on my test site.

I wanted to understand if you added any additional CSS to this block on your site that could have changed how the images appear?

    You misunderstood my problem.

I want to be able to decide how big the images should be at all times. I don’t like that all the covers are different sizes. The plugin automatically makes 1 handpicked product HUGE, which makes it look like crap and then three covers are bigger than four covers.
Why can’t all the covers be an exact size that I specify such as 400×600 or whatever?

So the covers you put in your screenshot are big but the three SHakespeare covers above it are smaller.

Among other things, I’m trying to keep my image sizes small but if I need to always have product images that will look good at the maximum width of a post, then I need to use HUGE images, which makes the product page look terrible. No one wants to zoom around a book cover!

    Hi @walton,

Thanks for getting back to us.

I want to be able to decide how big the images should be at all times

We do not have this option at this moment. It would be great to have you add your ideas to the Ideas Board, which is where developers go to look for future plugin features and improvements.

The plugin automatically makes 1 handpicked product HUGE, which makes it look like crap and then three covers are bigger than four covers.

I have also done another test on my test site. However, I wasn’t able to reproduce this on my end. During my test, all the handpicked products I selected were cropped to the same size. Could you please explain more about this so that we can look further?

We will be standing by for your response. Also, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions, we are here to help.

    Thanks.

OK, Look at this screenshot from the page I mentioned above:
The covers in the row of 3 book covers are all the same size.
But the covers in the row of 4 book covers are all the same size as each other. However they are smaller than the book covers in the row of 3 book covers.

Now Look when I pick 2 handpicked products. It’s a row of 2 so the book covers are both even bigger than the book covers in the row of 3. The images aren’t high enough quality so they are starting to get blurry. I would like to be able to handpick 1 or 2 products and have the covers still be smaller.

Or is this a glitch? Because this happens to me every time. The block expands proportionally to the width of the post so the more columns the smaller the images (fine great) but the fewer columns, the bigger the image! Picking one item (and I notice that NO demo sites ever show that, they always show people picking three items because that looks pretty good) makes for this HUGE image that is often longer than my post and half the time it’s blurry!

I often write blogposts and then say “to learn more buy X book” In the old days before Gutenberg, I could float the cover image right or left and then link to the page. Now that we are in the times of technology making life more and more complicated, I can’t do that, so I’m forced to use the Handpicked Product block and it drives me insane that it makes my posts look like crap.

The blurriness is because I’m forced to use a giant image but I’m trying not to upload huge images, over 800 pixels (per your own recommendations by the way).

Tried to post an idea but I’m not signing up for another account. I already have 10 Woocommerce and wordpress.com and forum and shmorum accounts and I never know what is what and who is who. I’m not signing up for an account for the WooCommerice IDea board seperate from all my other automatic logins. But thanks for the thought!

    That is fair :).

I suppose that is a drawback of everything being sized relatively for full responsive support. My best counter move here is to create the same amount of columns and upload empty images in column 3 / 4. That way column 1 and 2 are the same size.

Anything else would probably require some custom CSS. You can assign extra CSS classes to every block like so: https://d.pr/i/sc24mk

Thanks for seeing what I meant!

I have been feeling the blocks editor suck my will to use my website for quite some time and so I am back to the Classic Editor and my enthusiasm for WordPress has returned! Placing images to my own specs looks nicer anyway, to me!!
