Customizing Top Posts & Pages widget

Jetpack provides instructions to change the size of thumbnails and number of days used to calculate posts via edits to functions.php here: https://jetpack.com/blog/custom-thumbnails-top-posts-widget/

The gap between thumbnail and post title is still far too wide, suggesting an edit to padding might tighten things up.

How would I do that?

I’d consider the shortcode if you can provide more complete documentation. For now, I’d prefer using the widget and add edits to functions.php.
