I just updated to the most recent WP and now the dashboard is missing everything except: Posts, Media, Comments, Profile and Tools.
I can’t access anything else, so I can’t even deactivate plugins- any advice?
have a clean new install of the WP files.

  • Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

I do have a fresh install with my old content folder added. It is 3.4.1
    I tried 3.4.2 also.
I renamed the plugins folder to plugins.hold

My current theme is Twenty Ten-
I can’t switch themes because the dashboard does not give me that option.

Please re-read my post above. None of the suggestions I made require you to login to your WordPress dashboard.

I renamed my current theme, Twentyten, and when I do that I get a blank white screen. Is that what you meant me to do?

twentyten-old does not do much for me

Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Eleven folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

I just added 3.4.2, updated the database as per screen instructions, and still the short list of options on my dashboard.
I would like to repair the site, but can’t without my dashboard.

Using Phpmyadmin (or another MySQL management tool), first backup your database. Then navigate to your wp_usermeta table and locate the meta_key called “wp_capabilities” for your user_id. Change the meta-value for this record to:

    a:1:{s:13:"administrator";b:1;}

OK, thanks, will try after dinner.
Hope it works, if not I’ll be back for more advice later.
Many thanks for all the advice, WP is great when it works, but when you hit one of these odd bumps it makes you want to tear out your hair.

    Hi Esmi,
I followed your advice and changed “wp_capabilities” for my user_id exactly to your spec. No change.

I downloaded a new twentyten, as that is my theme, not twentyeleven, put that in with nothing changed except the styles.css file, still nothing in my dashboard except Posts, Media, Comments, Profile and Tools.

I looked through all the files and they all look normal to me. I wonder how to fix this?
Aside from my stylesheet and uploads, the site is all fresh files, and the DB has only changed according to your advice above.
It worked fine in the older version for a long time.

    esmi,
I finally got it straightened out.
I logged in as the other admin,(remembered to try that), and found that I had somehow changed myself to “author”- inadvertantly- DUH.

Wish I had thought to try this several hours ago.
But alls well that ends well.

Thanks again. There was a learning curve involved, at least for me/
