Just installed WP on my desktop into localhost to learn how it works
    Theme TwentyTen
    Install went OK…

In the Dashboard/Appearance/Editor: any module, I try to add any content, even ‘remark’ tokens, on pressing UPDATE, the edits just disappear, reverting to the virgin module.

In Dashboard/Appearance/Header: Attempting to upload a custom image, I get the error:

Unable to create directory C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

  • If you’re running linux with apache w/mysql then you really should be fine as long as you followed the guides and installed everything. The issue with permissions on linux is the same as everywhere else, the apache daemon and user both need to have access to the wordpress. This is usually done by making sure that apache is also in the users group or visa versa

    Ok – many thanks

I only wanted WP on localhost so that I could experiment with creating a set of pages 1024 wide with two columns, one being 800px wide.

Maybe I should abandon localhost approach and go the ‘online’ approach.

Many thanks for your efforts today – Perhaps it is best if this thread be closed as unsolved!

.. if you were using XAMPP ? or LAMP ? those forums specific to those applications would probably have yielded more info

I would not have a clue on either…

I sent the WP requirements to my Hosting company (www.oneandone.co.uk). They said that my (then) server was MS & did not offer MySQL. However if I were to upgrade/swap over to their Linux server, I will be able to run WP.

I did change over yesterday. Uploaded my conventional html website this morning.

I will try and upload WP tomorrow… (It is 22:20 here – headache is worse & bed is calling…)

Again, many thanks. If I have any further problems after uploadin ONline, I will start a new thread.

    Good nighht

wow, i never did like 1and1, even with the linux server there are ‘things’ you have to do to get WP working right

    Hi Frump – a quick update…
I uploaded everything to 1&1 Linux server & followed the WP 5 minute install…

Everything apparantly working as advertised ??

I have tested the editing – it works
I have uploaded custom header image – it works…

So, I thank you yet again for your help yesterday, though I couldn’t get it working off-line, I did learn a lot about it’s structure and how to alter perms!!!

    Take care & regards
    Donald

    Please mark as ‘solved’ thanks
