Dashboard Menu Control

    I have taken over developing a website from my son, who unexpectedly became ill. My problem is that when I open Dashboard — Appearance — Settings, there is no ‘menu’ control to open a ‘menu’ control panel. I would sincerely appreciate some advice to repair this, as I am a newbie novice without code knowledge.

  • Not 100% I’m with you – Dashboard, Appearance and Settings are 3 different menus.

    Do you mean that these options are not available to you? If so, then it could be a permissions issue – someone who has full ‘Administrator’ privilages for the site (presumably your son) needs to log on and make you an Administrator.

    There are 5 default memberships, so you could simply be on a lesser one (Editor, Autor, Contributor or Subscriber).

    it’s possile a plugin is interfering.

    To troubleshoot, have you tried:

    -deactivating all plugins. If the problem goes away, activate them individually to find the culprit?

    If you don’t have access to to your admin area, try deactivating them manually via FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    -switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific issue?

    If you don’t have access to your admin area, then access your server via FTP or SFTP.

    – resetting the plugins folder via FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems?

    Thanks for responding. I have used bad terminology. I was only trying to sequence the action to open the menu control panel starting with a click to Dashboard, then clicks to Appearance and Settings. I’ll check out t-p’s suggestion, but if it doesn’t work, I may come back to you. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply, though.

    Chiron, you may want to consider picking up a WordPress book (or ebook) to get started. It’s rough, jumping in cold. The WordPress for Dummies that’s either just out or just coming out that was cowritten by some of the smartest people in WP support :). (you can pay me later, Andrea…)

    Good tip. I am already onto it. It was by research through the WordPress Codex and ebooks ‘WordPress 2.9 ECommerce’ by Brian Bondari (published by PAKT), and ‘Beginning WordPress 3’ by Stephie Leary (published by Apress), that I discovered the problem.
