    Dashboard update of Jetpack is failing if version is 3.x. The availabe update seems to be 3.9.7. After selecting “update” and refreshing Dashboard, the plugin is still not updated. Attempts to update 3.9.7 is going in loop. Critical if you are in need of updating without FTP access.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

    Thanks for the report!

    Could you tell me what version of Jetpack you’re currently trying to update from, and what version of WordPress is currently running on your site?

    Do you receive an error or a warning when clicking on “Update”?

    The current Jetpack version is 3.9.7 – same as “available”. Running latest WP 4.5.2. No warnings or error message when clicking “Update”. Responds as if update is ok, but loops back to “new version 3.9.7 available” after refreshing Dashboard.

    Having the same exact issue. Running Jetpack 3.9.7. WordPress says update available, so I update it and receive the following:

    The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

    Enabling Maintenance mode…

    Updating Plugin Jetpack by WordPress.com (1/1)
    Downloading update from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/jetpack.3.9.7.zip…
    Unpacking the update…
    Installing the latest version…
    Removing the old version of the plugin…
    Plugin updated successfully.
    Jetpack by WordPress.com updated successfully. Hide Details
    Disabling Maintenance mode…

    All updates have been completed.

    The files are indeed downloaded and unpacked (the timestamps match on the server) but it just keeps download 3.9.7 instead.

    WordPress version is 4.5.2, I was hoping to update to the latest version of Jetpack due to the security issue recently identified.

    Exactly the same issue.
    Currently running Jetpack 4.0.2 (WordPress 4.5.2).

    The following message is displayed:
    Downloaden update van https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/jetpack.4.0.3.zip…
    Er is een fout opgetreden bij het bijwerken van Jetpack door WordPress.com: Download mislukt. Failed to connect to s.w.org port 443: Connection refused.
    Onderhoudsmode deactiveren…

    Alle updates zijn klaar.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

    Thank you both for the extra details!

    I was able to reproduce the problem:

    1. https://i.wpne.ws/gIuk
    2. https://i.wpne.ws/gJ6d
    3. https://i.wpne.ws/gIpT

    The good news is, the update did complete successfully. Your sites are secure. That update nag is definitely annoying though, and I don’t really understand why that’s happening. If anything, it should offer you to update to a newer version of Jetpack, like the latest version, 4.0.3. I’ll take a closer look and get back to you.

    @barates Your problem appears to be different from the one reported on this thread. Could you try to log in to your site via FTP or CPanel, delete the existing Jetpack plugin folder, and reinstall the plugin manually as explained here:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Managing_Plugins#Manual_Plugin_Installation

    You’ll find the Jetpack plugin folder here:

    wp-content
       plugins
         jetpack - DELETE THIS FOLDER

    If you’re not sure how to do this, you can ask your hosting company for help. They should also have documentation explaining how to edit or remove files from your site using FTP or a File Manager in your admin panel.

    If that doesn’t help, could you please start your own thread, as per the Forum Welcome?

    Thank you!

    Hi barates, I think your issue is actually slightly different. Your website is looking for the correct version (4.0.3 compared to your installed version of 4.0.2), but there is a connection failure over a secure channel. The issue being discussed here by myself and MrMountian is that Jetpack is downloading the same version that is installed

    Is your website s.w.org?

    Thanks for the update Jeremy, although how are you sure that the files have actually updated? When I go look at the jetpack.php file, it still says that this is version 3.9.7:

    /*
     * Plugin Name: Jetpack by WordPress.com
     * Plugin URI: https://jetpack.com
     * Description: Bring the power of the WordPress.com cloud to your self-hosted WordPress. Jetpack enables you to connect your blog to a WordPress.com account to use the powerful features normally only available to WordPress.com users.
     * Author: Automattic
     * Version: 3.9.7
     * Author URI: https://jetpack.com
     * License: GPL2+
     * Text Domain: jetpack
     * Domain Path: /languages/
     */

    define( 'JETPACK__MINIMUM_WP_VERSION', '4.3' );

    define( 'JETPACK__VERSION',            '3.9.7' );
    define( 'JETPACK_MASTER_USER',         true );

    That would explain the update nag, the update process is actually stuck going out and getting 3.9.7. Right?

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

    how are you sure that the files have actually updated?

    I checked the plugin files that were changed in the security release; the patches were applied.

    it still says that this is version 3.9.7:

    3.9.7 is actually the right version, there is no 3.9.8. It just shouldn’t prompt you to update to 3.9.7 since you already have that version. I’m just not sure why the WordPress update process doesn’t offer 4.0.3 here. I’ll post again here as soon as I have some news!

    Got it. Thanks. I didn’t realize the security patches were available in 3.9.7, should have read the blog post closer:

    We have prepared and shipped point releases for all twenty-one vulnerable branches of the Jetpack codebase: 2.0.7, 2.1.5, 2.2.8, 2.3.8, 2.4.5, 2.5.3, 2.6.4, 2.7.3, 2.8.3, 2.9.4, 3.0.4, 3.1.3, 3.2.3, 3.3.4, 3.4.4, 3.5.4, 3.6.2, 3.7.3, 3.8.3, 3.9.7, and 4.0.3. Downloads for each branch can be found here.

    Sorry about that.

    FYI Seeing this issue as well on a site hosted via bluehost. Will be watching this thread.

    Having the same issue as MrMountain and skadu on my GoDaddy-hosted sites. Same specs as these two, w/ most current version of WordPress not seeming to find the 4.0.3 version of Jetpack (just keeps offering me to reinstall 3.9.7).

    My problem is slightly different. The site is running Jetpack 3.9.6 but there is no notice of an update available, and no update link. If I hadn’t gotten a message from WordFence today I wouldn’t have known there was a new version, let alone that it was critical.

    @jeremy:
    Problem solved with manual installation. Thx!
    I Sincerely hope that this was a once in a lifetime mishap.
    Is there a setting I have to set to avoid the connection refused error?

    @jeremy:
    After (succesfully) updating another plugin Jetpack installed the correct laguage pack (dutch). Problem solved then. Apparently this occurs later due to manual installation?
