Dashboard > Users : Fatal Error

    Good afternoon,

    I have recently updated my site to WordPress 3.0 and experiencing difficulties within the Dashboard accessing the Users overview area, although Add New and Your Profile remain accessible.

    Below is the error message that is returned.

    Fatal error: Cannot access empty property in myURL/public_html/wp-includes/user.php on line 725

    As mentioned before there seems to be no problems regarding any other user functionality. I have up to this point re installed the whole of wordpress as well as targeting the precise file that is specified. Also I have been through the plugins deactivating to see if this has affected it.

    I really don’t know how to resolve aside from potentially a completely clean install. However as this site is already in production with several hundred registered users across each time zone there is no ideal time for this type of maintenance. If anyone has encountered this issue please let me know.

  • How did you update WordPress? Did the update complete without any errors and warnings?

    Hi, Josh. I updated from 2.9.2 to 3.0 and it went through OK. When I went to look at installed plugins, I got a different fatal error: Fatal error: Call to a member function add_rewrite_tag() on a non-object in /home/content/25/4887925/html/wp-includes/taxonomy.php on line 289.

    Rolling back the site to archive now. Any hints on what I did wrong?

    BonsaiGreg, if you’ve already rolled back to 2.9.2, upgrade the Podcasting Plugin by TSG to 2.3.10 before upgrading WordPress.

    If you haven’t rolled back to 2.9.2, reset your plugins and upgrade the Podcasting Plugin by TSG to 2.3.10 before reactivating it.

    Hi there.. I got the same error.. updated to 3.0.1 updated the plugins.. still there..
    disabled all the plugins (Only have a couple): Akismet, Auto Thickbox, NextGEN Gallery, WordPress Backup, WordPress Firewall
    manually uploaded the entire 3.01 files
    reactivated all the plugins
    at every stage I still get the same error???

    Any other ideas?

    Hey,

    Apologies to everyone my life got in the way of this one but I am back trying to figure out the issue. So what I’ve done so far is dump the whole thing out of the MySQL. Then on a local install I have been implementing the tables one by one and it appears the problem is within the ‘wp_usermeta’ table which is pretty obvious I suppose what with the error message appearing on the User’s page.

    What I am trying to figure out now is how to rectify the issue when there are 1000+ registered users and half dozen authors? Will an export from within WordPress preserve these ‘subscribers’? Mainly rhetorical question as I will investigate further tomorrow. Although if anyone can guesstimate the table error that would be great.

    Ok. Stayed up and this appears to have solved the problem, although I couldn’t swear that hasn’t adversely affected some other aspect of the install.

    Order usermeta table by user_id. You should find a user_id = 0. Removing this table row and this should resolve the User tab section

    Had the same problem with the Loginza plug-in, which enables some Open-ID.

    Tried to connect my admin user account with Gmail.
    During the connection smth went wrong, and it appeared, that at any place on the site there were actions made by the mentioned account, it showed the mistake Fatal error: Cannot access empty property in wp-includes/user.php on line 725. And I couldn’t resolve it from the WordPress.
    I coped with the issue through PHPMyAdmin, where I found that the user in the table wp_usermeta according to the user_id column had a completely empty row (which was unique for the whole table). After I deleted it everything was OK.
    Look for the empty rows.

    It needs some mending or it’s an accident, but I won’t use it, because that mistake could be caused by _any_ user.
