    Hey there,

Love the plugin! It’s fantastic and I’ve really made use of it in my site.

I have two questions if I may:

    – I’m on a shared hosting. When do you generally advise people to start using data sampling? I have it enabled and the rate set to ’20’ but I’m worried I’m missing views (even though in theory, it should be fine). My site can generally hit around 130 concurrent users and I generally get around 55k page views per day. My site focuses heavily on users submitting posts so posts are hit quite often. I’ve implemented phpfastcache around most of the site as I was constantly hitting the entry process limit but since doing that, I haven’t come near it.

    – If I set a log limit. Let’s say for 10 days. Does this wipe the actual view count for posts older than 10 days? I’m pretty sure it does but I want to clarify. I want my views to permanently always be visible. Thanks!

    Hi @genesisbits, it’s been a while!

When do you generally advise people to start using data sampling?

My usual response to this question would be “use the Data Sampling feature if your site is getting a lot of traffic (eg. 125,000+ visits per day)”, but in truth you should use it whenever your site needs it.

Shared hosting usually means limited resources (RAM, disk, bandwith, etc) and so you should do your best to help your site’s performance while using the least amount of resources possible. In your specific case, I think a sampling rate of 40 should be good enough but if 20 works for you (eg. your site’s performance is good and your hosting isn’t complaining that it’s using too many resources) then I see no reason to change it. You should still monitor your site from time to time to make sure it’s not using too many resources and adjust the sampling rate accordingly if needed.

If I set a log limit. Let’s say for 10 days. Does this wipe the actual view count for posts older than 10 days?

The plugin will delete all post views data that’s older than 10 days. For example, views data from 11 days ago will be automatically deleted by the plugin. If you later changed your mind and wanted to show the most viewed articles from the past 30 days, the plugin will only have data from the last 10 days to build the list.

If you want to further improve your site’s performance, you might want to enable the Data Caching feature as well.

Thank you very much Hector as always! I appreciate the response and the information you have provided.
