My database has a problem that won’t let me back it up, won’t let me update any plugins, and won’t let me install any new plugins. I posted here a week ago saying that I couldn’t update several plugins, but now I’ve discovered its worse than that. The backups that have been automatically taken over recent months are all 0kb, so I haven’t got a version to restore to. I tried installing a different backup plugin but got the same errors that show when I try to update existing plugins – “could not copy file: xxxx.php” with xxxx differing per plugin.

The site IS running, and I don’t want to lose it. Any help appreciated

Did you try to update it through phpMyAdmin?

No, but you cured it anyway! I opened cpanel to do as you suggested, and immediately saw the issue – I’m comfortably over my disk space allowance, which was obviously throttling my ability to update plugins. I’ve removed some old stuff to get back under my limit, and hey presto my next attempt to update plugins went flawlessly ??
Many thanks for the suggestion that put me on to it
