I’ve been searching through forums for ages but can’t find any answers.

    I’ve got the infamous message:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

A lot of places are saying check wp-config because 99% of the time something will have changed your username or password.

So I’ve had a look, but I have no idea if the names are correct. I’m pretty sure they’re things that I wouldn’t have personally chosen, but no idea if they were just default inputs or something.

Is there any way of finding out what they are meant to be? Like a forgot password link or something?

You need to check your database connection details with your hosts and I’m afraid that’s not something we can help you with.

I’ve managed to find out and they are all as they should be.

Which means I have no idea what is causing the error…

Well – one of the details you entered is wrong. Otherwise you would not be seeing that error message.

Is there no other possible cause for this? They all look correct.

The only other possible cause is some kind of problem at your hosts’ end. Perhaps an issue with their Mysql server.

    Ok.

So is it just something I have to wait out?

I seriously doubt it. Have you tried asking your hosts about this?

    Thanks for the help.

I emailed them a while ago and they’ve said it’s a problem with hacking attempts affecting the server or something.

I suggest that you ask them why any steps that they have taken may be affecting your ability to connect to your database.

They’ve told me it’s temporarily down until they can make sure it’s safe.

Then you’ll need to wait until the MySQL server is back up again.
