I’m having an issue with a “Database Connection Error.” I know that when this error comes up, it usually means that there is an issue in the wp-config file, but I don’t think that is it in this case. The website has been running fine for months and months. Then, all of a sudden, it randomly gets the database connection error.

So when viewing the site, it may look fine for a while, then, I can click a random link and I’ll suddenly get the white screen with the database connection error. I have no clue what is causing that.

Before the database connection error started, some of my posts were reverting back to an older state of content. And then they would randomly show the newer content at times. During that same time, I was also constantly getting logged out of the wordpress dashboard due to a “session timeout.”

I ended up somehow getting the post and timeout errors fixed, but the database connection error won’t go away. I’ve used a plugin to check for malware, but everything checked out fine there, too. Any idea of what the problem could be?

Are you using any caching plugins? Any content delivery networks? If you could post your URL that would also help.

I have just started getting exactly the same issue as this:

    (Intermittent) Error establishing database connection
Sometimes the current page is displayed and sometimes one from about 3 months ago
Lots of extra login screen in WordPress admin sessions
    WSOD (occasionally)
Session expired screens in WP wdmin when trying to do updates

I have run a Repair on the WP database and restored back from an old WP data backup but the problem has not gone away

I have raised a ticket with my Hosting Company (Ipage) but it had not yet been actioned

I believe it started to go wrong overnight 8th-9th November this week

I will update on here if I get more news but if anyone else has any suggestions……..

All the problems I described above on my web site seem to have cleared up today of there own accord (and my support ticket with Ipage is still showing as “open”)

However, I have now noticed a very sharp decrease in the page load and refresh speed also just starting today. The initial load is now taking several seconds where before it was virtually instant and in addition many of the content blocks and jpg images are being displayed blank even after the page is showing as loaded on the browser. They then load OK if I do a browser refresh

I’m beginning to think this is a hosting issue and some of the server/database parameters are being “tweaked”

My site seems to be suddenly working again, too. And this particular site is also hosted through iPage, and my issue began on the 8th or 9th. It had to be something on iPage’s end.

@keithdriscoll I’m not using any caching plugins, and I’m not using any content delivery networks. This issue seems to have resolved itself at the moment, unless iPage support did something to fix it without telling me. I’ll post the url if I end up having any more issues.

    Thanks.

Glad everything is working! Since you have changed nothing, I would rule out that it is a WordPress issue. I’ve seen similar behavior happen due to hosts performing maintenance, etc.
