I updated Stream and got this message:

    Stream Database Update Required

Stream has updated! Before we send you on your way, we need to update your database to the newest version.

This process could take a little while, so please be patient

So I clicked the button, and after 3 seconds got a blank screen. Clicking back and then reloading any admin page still shows the update message.

  • Hey ZigPress – we’re looking into that for you right now. What version are you updating from?

From 1.4.2. Running WordPress 3.9. Thanks.

I just deactivated all my plugins except Stream and tried the update again, but got the same blank page.

    Hey ZigPress,

I’ve installed a fresh copy from stream v1.4.2 and upgraded to v.1.4.3 locally and I can’t seem to reproduce the issue. Do you have by any chance a local copy of the website you are trying to upgrade stream on which have WP_DEBUG set to true so we can get the error message?

Thanks for helping us getting to the bottom of this issue!

I couldn’t download Stream 1.4.2 from the plugin repository – there don’t seem to be any earlier versions available in SVN.

However I temporarily enabled debug on the live site, and this is the error:

Notice: wp_register_script was called incorrectly. Scripts and styles should not be registered or enqueued until the wp_enqueue_scripts, admin_enqueue_scripts, or login_enqueue_scripts hooks. Please see Debugging in WordPress for more information. (This message was added in version 3.3.) in /var/www/vhosts/localhost.localdomain/royalmaltagolfclub.com/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3245

But this is appearing on all admin pages while the site is in debug mode, so I’m not sure if this is actually the problem.

And in fact I can confirm that the above notice is being generated by another plugin, because when I deactivated all other plugins, it disappeared, even in debug mode.

In my wp_options table, the wp_stream_db value is 1.3.1.

I do most plugin updates remotely in bulk via InfiniteWP and rarely log in to the site admin – so I have no idea how long ago this database update notice appeared.

I’ve tried many scenarios including installing 1.3.1 from github (you can install all releases through github here) and updating to 1.4.2 and then moving on to 1.4.3. Unfortunately, I couldn’t reproduce your specific situation. We did a major database upgrade in 1.4.0. Can you try to downgrade to that version, doing the update and update to the latest version.

Just to make sure, have you tried turning on WP_DEBUG and then trying the database upgrade?

    Thread Starter zigpress

    (@zigpress)

Yes, I had debug on when trying the upgrade.

I now downloaded 1.4.0 from Git, deactivated the current version, installed 1.4.0, activated it, and clicked the db upgrade button.

This time I still got a blank page (apart from the notice above), but the URL was the site’s home page url (not admin) and repeated refreshes kept bringing up the blank screen.

I could keep doing this all night, but I think a faster way to get my installation up to scratch would be if you could provide a .sql file that will make the necessary changes to the DB – is that feasible?

If I clear out the stream tables and reinstall from scratch, I lose 2 months of audit data and I don’t really want to do that if I can avoid it.

If you want me to zip up my stream tables and send them to you so you can edit their schema to version 1.4.3 and send them back (if you’re willing to do that), I’d be happy to send them.

    Hey ZigPress,
