Database Update Required

I have been using WordPress for several years and recently I have been receiving the following message fairly frequently:
Database Update Required
WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.
The database update process may take a little while, so please be patient.
Update WordPress Database
This message started to appear about a month or so ago and I’ve always click on the Update button. I seem to be getting this message every couple of days, maybe two or three times a week. I don’t remember getting this message or request until last month.
This message appears randomly as I click on a menu item from the dashboard. Once I update the database the system seems to work as expected, at least until the next update request appears.
Is this normal? Is there something that needs to be addressed? Any information or guidance is appreciated.
