With the website that’s having trouble, I installed WP around a year ago, and I have never upgraded it ever since. Suddenly, out of nowhere today, while I’m already logged in and just doing the usual editing of posts, I’m directed to a screen where I’m told:

    Database Upgrade Required
Your WordPress database is out-of-date, and must be upgraded before you can continue.

I didn’t do a thing, because I saw no good reason why this message should have come up. I logged out and closed my browser, hoping that just logging back in fresh might help. Instead, the login fields come up without the WP logo or any of the usual style/formatting, and when I try to log in, I get ERROR: Invalid username. Even though it’s exactly the same login info I’ve been using for a while now, including earlier today even.

Then, the situation gets worse again: now the site isn’t working at all — I browse to the home page, and my browser sits there for a minute, then instead of loading a page it downloads to my desktop a file named mydomain.com, and it’s a totally blank file.

I’ve contacted my host to see if they can help, but I wanted to see if anyone here might be able to help, too, since my host has in the past not always been up on WP-specific problems. Thoughts? What the hell is happening here?

  • what site are you talking about? https://marksmeritt.com/ ?

    thought about upgrading?

    No problem navigating your site.

Please do your WordPress Backups before Upgrading WordPress.

I was talking about https://theoffhandband.com/ — and yes, it turns out everything seems fine now. It sure was screwy before. Maybe my host got my support message and did something about it but hasn’t written me yet. Hope the problem doesn’t happen again! I’ll mark this as resolved — for now!

ugh, that site really needs an upgrade. ??

What, theoffhandband.com needs an upgrade? Believe me, I take little pleasure in doing my websites on my own and not being able to afford to do otherwise. Hearing “ugh” doesn’t change my abilities or my wallet.

After things were fine again, then they weren’t again, all the same stuff. My hosting company shared this with me:

The internal server error you have experienced, seems to be because
    of exceeding resource usage limit.

They made clear this was the WordPress software and suggested I contact WP for support. I realize now that maybe the issue was that I’d had several posts open for editing at once, so I will be careful to do fewer things at a time. Even so, if anyone has any ideas on this based on the info above from my host, I’d appreciate it, thanks.

    52 %CPU ? of what sort of cpu? a p2?

who is your host? these people? https://www.nac.net/
