Date tag problems

I’m having a small problem with the date tag in my design. In the default template the date only appears once for every day even if there is more than one post that day (i.e. the date appears at the top of all posts for that day) but I want to have the date in each post. The only problem is that if I simply move the date tag in index.php it still only appears in the most recent post for that day and not in the others.

I’ve seen what I’m trying to do on other WordPress sites around the place so I know it is possible. I just don’t know how to do it. Can somebody please help me?
