Deactivate = Dead Site?

I’ve used this plugin forever and it’s been great until most recent update. Now, I’m trying to troubleshoot what is causing conflict with my theme and it’s BackupGuard. What’s worse, just deactivating the plugin causes the website to give 500 error. What’s up with that? Help me fix, I’m happy to change the star. Feeling trapped ??
