I’ve been made aware that users of “DeepL API Free” receive the error “Wrong endpoint. Use api-free.deepl.com”

This is because “DeepL API Pro” uses the endpoint “api.deepl.com” and this is/was hardcoded into Loco Translate.

Version 2.5.3 (currently the development version) adds a configuration so you can change this base URL to whatever you like.

Personally I find DeepL’s API terms confusing. On the one hand you can use their API for free (up to a limit) but on the other hand it is not permitted to integrate the free API into CAT tools. (which is what Loco Translate is).

I struggle to see the point of an API that can’t be implemented for what seems to be its primary purpose, but I cannot get involved in whether using this API is against the DeepL terms of use or not. This is between DeepL and their customers.

You will see no instance of “api-free.deepl.com” in my software and I can only recommend you use the configurable URL field for testing purposes. Upgrade your DeepL account as appropriate for your needs.
