• Could not find any documentation on how to set a “default” redirect to a custom 404 page if none of the redirection rules matches. Is there a workaround or do I need a different plugin ?

  • I think what you want can be found under the Options menu > Auto-generate URL.

@panoptic, I did that, but it seems to always redirect to the default WordPress 404 error page instead of the one I specified. Other Redirection rules I specified works find though.

There is no default 404 redirect, and unless you have a very specific reason for doing so I wouldn’t advise you try and do that – a 404 is the correct response to return for a page that doesn’t exist. If you redirect it then you are saying that the page used to exist and now lives somewhere else – this has a very different meaning. If you want to display a custom message then you should modify the 404.php file in your theme.
